Steps to Safety

It's very important that you know what to do in the case of a natural or man-made disaster. Every family needs to have an Emergency Preparedness Plan. Talk with your family and make sure everyone knows what to do in the case of an emergency.

STEP ONE: Have a Family Emergency Plan

It's important that you and your family plan ahead and know what to do in case of any disaster. Talk to your parents and help them to develop emergency plans for weather related emergencies like tornadoes, hurricanes or floods and other emergencies like chemical accidents. Everyone in your family should know what to do, where to go and what to bring in every emergency situation.

STEP TWO: Drill for Skill

Ever heard the saying that "practice makes perfect"? Well, this also applies to Emergency Preparedness. Make sure that your family practices your Family Emergency Plan at least twice a year. This will help you to know exactly what to do in case of a disaster.

STEP THREE: Prepare a Disaster Supply Kit

Besides knowing what to do in the case of an emergency, you should also make sure that you have a Disaster Supply Kit in case you and your family have to take immediate shelter or evacuate. Make sure that your family plans ahead and prepares a kit with non-perishable food items, clothing, a battery powered radio and flashlight, water and necessary medications. You may even want to include games and books!

STEP FOUR: Know Your Tones

In the event of an emergency, the AEMA may use Warning Sirens to alert you and your family of a threatening situation. You should understand the different siren tones so you will know how to react when they are sounded.
